Species
Types of Wood
European White Oak
European White Oak is sourced from the temperate forests of central and northern Europe. European White Oak is a hardwood known for its timeless elegance and durability. It is preferred by many due to the whiter hue as compared to American and other species of Oak. The appearance of the floor is clean, light and spacious. Due to these attributes and others, European White Oak has become increasingly popular with designers, architects and other interior design professionals
Walnut
Walnut offers an unparalleled combination of beauty and practicality, making it a popular choice for flooring. Walnut’s remarkable grain pattern varies from straight to wavy and even swirly at times with a deeper honey brown color filled with character and depth. We offer Walnut wood in a variety of stains and finishes.
Cuts
Types of Cuts
Plain Sawn
Plain Sawn is the most efficient method of cutting
a log, thereby producing the least amount of waste. Plain sawn flooring will display the full breadth of the log’s undulating rings. This shows varied grains and patterns that truly convey the character of the wood.
Rift & Quartered
Rift & Quartered displays a much tighter grain pattern. This milling technique produces a consistent, aligned appearance. R&Q is the most expensive way to process wood flooring but it produces a notably uniform presentation.
Wood
Grades of Wood
Rustic
Rustic grade wood will show light character as these cuts come from the outer part of the tree. Rustic cuts yield more color variation and bigger knots
Prime
Prime grade flooring has less character & variation as compared to Rustic. Prime grade will show a more consistent grain pattern with less imperfections and a more uniform appearance.
Finishes
Types of Finishes
Polyurethane
Polyurethane finish is applied to the majority of our products as it will provide the most durable and longest-lasting protective layer for your flooring.
Oil
Oil finishes tend to preserve and amplify the character of the wood. Oil finishes offer a more natural appearance and oils also have the capacity to alter the color, depth, and richness of the wood.
Unfinished
Our high quality European Oak plank flooring is also available unfinished. This product has no finish, stain, treatments or sealers applied. This flooring is typically used on projects that will receive a field applied stain after the floor has been laid.
Section Plan
Layers of the Plank
1. UV oil or UV polyurethane High Wear Sealer
UV Oil- Environmentally friendly UV oil finishes contain primarily cold-pressed vegetable oils and aromatic hardening oils that penetrate the wood surface. After curing in the factory, these finishes emphasize the natural beauty of the wood and provide lasting protection.
UV Polyurethane- the industry’s gold standard for superior protection on high-traffic wood floors. This polyurethane based sealer offers superior scruff, scratch and stain resistance. This product is GREENGAURD Gold Certified, consistent with our environmentally friendly manufacturing approach.
2. 6mm Wear Layer Hardened European Oak
Bates Surfaces uses only the highest quality genuine European Oak. This translates to a consistent grain pattern. The wood is cured & UV treated to provide unparalleled durability. The generous 6mm wear layer will allow for multiple refinishes, extending the life of the floor
3. Exterior Grade Baltic Birch substrate
The 11 layers of high-quality Baltic Birch is the ideal substrate for European Oak. The high-density ply is designed for exterior applications, so this material is the perfect dimensionally stable substrate for engineered hardwood flooring.
4. 2mm relief cuts every 5″ O.C.
The generous volume of relief cuts promote proper adhesion and allow for a tight installation that follows the contours of the floor.
